Wasp Baiting


Wasp baiting is a targeted control method used when a wasp nest cannot be located. This technique involves strategically placing bait containing a slow-acting insecticide that wasps are attracted to. The bait is designed to mimic the wasps natural food sources, such as protein.

Foraging wasps collect the bait and return to their hidden nest, where they distribute it to other colony members, including the queen. Over time, the insecticide works to eliminate the entire colony. Since the bait is specifically formulated to attract wasps, it minimises the risk to non-target species.

At Gippsland Pest Management, we only consider wasp baiting as a treatment option when the nest cannot be located, ensuring that this method is used appropriately and effectively. A wasp baiting program typically runs over a 2-3 week period, with our technicians visiting the site every 2-3 days to check and replenish the baiting locations. This consistent monitoring ensures the effectiveness of the program and the safe removal of the wasp colony.

What is Wasp Baiting?

Wasp Baiting programs are a control strategy that works in situations where you are having high wasp activity that poses a safety risk, but you are UNABLE to locate a nest.

Wasp Baiting is NOT the best control method if you KNOW where the nest is and can easily locate it, if you are in this situation have a look at our wasp treatments

If you are UNABLE to locate the nest, then a wasp baiting program is for you. This would involve setting up wasp baiting stations that contain a lure attractant, once a wasp has interacted with the lure attractant, they would then take this back to their nest and expose the nest to the lure, resulting in nest collapse.

Description of Wasp Baiting Program

This treatment needs to be conducted over multiple site visits usually over a 2-3 week period. The initial site setup visit would involve setting up wasp baiting stations with lure in various locations around the site where activity is being experienced.

The technician would then need to attend the site every 2-3 days to check the wasp baiting stations and replenish them as required. It is essential that these stations remain replenished once the wasps have started feeding to get the best result from the program.

A Wasp baiting program will be effective within a 1 km range of the wasp baiting locations. The lure used in a wasp baiting program contains a smell that deters Bees or any other non-target pests from interacting with the lure. However, it is imperative that the wasp baiting stations and lure are removed at the completion of the wasp baiting program.

Preparation prior to beginning a Wasp Baiting Program

  • Know where you are experiencing the most activity around your site.
  • Ensure Pets and Children are kept away from the wasp baiting areas whilst the program is in effect.
  • In high activity areas it will take 2-3 weeks before you are seeing a decline in the wasp activity around your site.

Damage caused by Wasps:

Some damage we have experienced as pest controllers caused by bees/wasps are:

  • Damage to plaster within your home, wasps can eat plaster in homes and buildings and this is sometimes the trigger for a pest controller to be called as they have eaten their way into the building.
  • Damage to plaster/walls from honey as it is a liquid it can stain.
  • Both wasp and bee hives have been known to start fires if located inside a fireplace.

Health Risks:

The sting from both a wasp or bee can cause anaphylaxis in some people symptoms include an all over rash, swelling of tongue or throat, trouble breathing, gut cramps, diarrhoea, vomiting or even a drop in blood pressure (shock).

If you experience any of the symptoms after a sting from a wasp or a bee please seek medical attention.

Because of the high risk to people’s health, within the home or an innocent neighbour/passerby wasp treatments are treated with the highest priority.
